How does the doorman conquer himself?

How does the doorman conquer himself?

Helping the janitor who thinks he is Napoleon involves guiding him to conquer himself before he attempts to conquer the world. Self-discovery is one of the most challenging endeavors for an individual, let alone for a nation of millions. Saving the janitor may be difficult, but his children can turn this situation into an advantage. As the children of both Napoleon and a working-class father, this family can offer valuable lessons.

The Advantages of the “New Turk”

Turkey, whose modern identity is as fresh as the Hungarian Europeans who became Hungarian only recently, can turn crises into opportunities. Being a janitor is no disgrace; being a laborer is far more honorable than earning a living through idleness. The key problem lies in knowing oneself and stepping into an honest life. If growth and progress are desired, this is an obligation.

If the janitor conquers himself rather than all of Europe, he can begin reasoning from factual foundations. Instead of the Europe in his mind, focusing on Çankaya—Turkey’s seat of government—can be far more beneficial. While Çankaya may lack a sea, it offers countless advantages not found in Europe in terms of world history.

In these lands, which are relatively new to the idea of Turkishness, anyone can become a Turk. A nationalism not based on ethnic roots is easier for Turkey to embrace. While other countries choke on theories of racial purity, Turks can easily turn migrants into Turks, exporting Turkishness itself. Historically, Turks have encountered almost every religion and geography—Judaism, Christianity, Islam, atheism; seas, mountains, and steppes. This lack of prejudice defines a truly open society. Why shouldn’t everyone become a Turk? After all, wasn’t this the goal?

Building New Techniques in Identity Formation

Turkey’s delayed identity construction gives it the opportunity to incorporate new techniques and materials into the process. Instead of boarding Europe’s outdated Napoleonic train and becoming its doorman, Turkey can choose to fly. The remedies humanity needs can emerge from the crises of these lands. Instead of ethnic nationalism, Turkey can adopt political nationalism, avoiding the traps others fell into late.

From Knocking on Europe’s Doors to Becoming Its Doorkeeper

Sure, we can earn some money by holding refugees here. Or, we can build a life for ourselves as janitors at the doorsteps of German families. But there is a better option: living as ourselves and building our own work. Our own business model aligns with the needs of our geography. In this model, responding to the needs of our surroundings elevates both us and our environment.

This isn’t about conquering other lands. If we conquer ourselves and gain the right perspective, we will become a model for other nations, winning hearts and growing through inspiration. No weapon can open the doors of the heart. The only “weapon” that can do so is serving as an example by being yourself.

Starting With Ourselves

Becoming yourself begins with abandoning old delusions and excuses. It starts by cutting out the nonsense. Those within Turkey’s borders are part of Turkey. If there is any ethnic root, it is the soil itself. To belong to this land is to become its tree. Turkey cannot grow with soil imported from Corsica or Asia. It must grow from its own soil, just as every tree grows from the land where it is planted.
